With many years of restaurant experience, Paula Dershon has opened Mountain House Kitchen on Highway 58 in Crescent Lake.

By DIANE KAHLER and DOUG BATES/The Herald — Highway 58’s newest restaurant has just opened in the community of Crescent Lake, and judging from the brisk lunch business it was doing Friday, May 14, you would have to say it’s off to a promising start.

Mountain House Kitchen has indoor seating for up to 16 guests, as well as outdoor dining.

It’s called Mountain House Kitchen, and it’s the brainchild of experienced restauranteur Paula Dershon, a resident of the area for many years. She and her husband, Kevin Dershon, a local contractor, have homes in Crescent Lake and Creswell.

On Friday, Paula Dershon was working the kitchen alone while a friend and Paula’s granddaughter were waiting tables. The cozy restaurant — closed by its former owner last winter and reopened by Dershon about three weeks ago — has six tables serving as many as 16 diners indoors, plus outdoor seating.

When asked her choice, she says the customers really like her Brunch Burrito and Mountain House Skillet, both on her breakfast menu along with omelets, country fried steak, tri-tip hash and many traditional breakfast standards. The lunch menu includes six different burgers, three salad classics and sandwich favorites such as a chicken club, patty melt and BLT. A house specialty is beer-battered fish and chips made with hand-cut cod.

At present, Mountain House Kitchen is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. For orders to go call 541-433-5249.

Located on the east side of Highway 58 next door to Manley’s Tavern, Mountain House Kitchen is operating on a cash-only basis until later this month when the installation of Internet service will allow Dershon to begin accepting credit cards. ATM machines are available at Manley’s and across the road at the Odell Sportsman Center convenience center.
