500 student-made tiles tell story of tree growth on Oakridge HS wall

By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor  —  If you ask many of the elementary school students about the new mural on the High School wall, they’ll tell you it’s about the trees.

I’m sure that many of you have speculated how the mosaic mural came to be and what all does it mean? Did the School District have to pay for the entire project, and at what cost? Who did the work? I was certainly curious and asked myself all those same questions. Well, The Herald will, hopefully, answer all of those questions and more.

“Holding Brokenness Together” is a statewide series of murals being orchestrated by artist, musician, and teacher Crystal Adkins of Lincoln City, Oregon. Fundraiser and grant writer, Crystal raised funding to support her work that has since gone statewide. Her work is about art therapy.

When not posing for the photo, these students seem intent on turning their tiles into the perfect mosaics.
Now that is what’s called focusing on your work. These two young lads are in serious deliberation on the outcome of their product.

Oakridge School District contacted Ms. Adkins and asked to be a part of the project.

Students from the Oakridge Elementary School, teachers, and community volunteers worked on the project. The mural tells the story of cellular healing traction, the process by which trees grow from within.

The work and materials for the mural at Oakridge High School is valued at around $75,000.
