Book review: THE BOTANY OF DESIRE

THE BOTANY OF DESIRE  by Michael Pollan        Copyright:  2001

By ROBERT WOODSON/for The Herald  —  Back several years ago when Jean and I would spend a few nights each week watching Public Television, Michael Pollan’s show was a favorite.   So it was good to find his book “THE BOTANY OF DESIRE” – A PLANT’S EYE VIEW OF THE WORLD.  And it was good to find it a fascinating read.  Pollan’s writing as well done as his T.V. Show narration.  With only Four (4) chapters covering 238 pages,  this brisk read  has Four leading characters – The Apple, the Tulip, Marijuana, and the Potato.  Each a superhero in the plant world.
Now that we may have a break in our rainy weather, we have a chance to admire our apple tree blooming, tulips pushing up out of the ground and shove some spuds in the garden.

Woodcrafter Robert Woodson sits on one of his creations at the Oakridge Arts Council’s Gallery. He is an enthusiastic, if not reluctant contributor to The Herald Tara Kennedy photo
