By BEN OLSON/for The Herald — “My sentence is too long!” “Don’t worry, we’ll win on the appeal,” my lawyer said confidently. That’s a believable exchange. “Your sentences are too long, they tend to run on.” said my editor to me recently. He regretted having to chop them up, preferring that I do that myself. How long is too long? If I understand this correctly, 20 words. If 25% of your sentences are longer than 20 words, you’re bloviating. Oh, another thing. For writing in a newspaper, my vocabulary should be at an 8th grade level. “Bloviating” didn’t show up until my sophomore year of English.
You won’t find Kardashian news in The Herald
Such are the foibles of a non-paid writer being directed by a non-paid interim editor. This is a challenge, providing our neighbors with news. The staff of the Highway 58 Herald takes their task seriously. We’re trying to give you an accurate view of what’s going on in our little part of the world. A veteran in the newspaper business said, “more people care what the Kardashians are doing than whether we may be on the edge of a nuclear war.” That’s a sad commentary about today’s society, but it’s the truth..
You’ll have to go elsewhere to keep up with the Kardashians. Other news sources are much better letting you know what’s going on in world news. The Highway 58 Herald will let you know what your local government is up to. They’ll give you the latest on business news in the Highway 58 corridor. Highway closings and school delays presented by a source that can be trusted. This isn’t a chat forum. Write your letter to the editor and sign your name. Your point will be taken, and there will be no doubt as to whom to attribute it to.

I will defend and promote this enterprise that is the Highway 58 Herald. A number of citizens thought so highly of the idea of having a local news source that they have devoted their time, energy and money to its success. Please do what you can to support this online paper. The Highway 58 Herald is attempting to stand between you and the darkness of no news at all.
