Current Situation: Several helicopters and two scoopers, specialized firefighting aircraft that fill their tanks by skimming the surface of waterbodies, engaged in fire suppression yesterday primarily on the southeast edge of the fire, just west of Waldo Lake. Hand crews hiked in six miles from Shadow Bay boat ramp to the east side of the fire to set up camp in preparation for hand-line construction to the west and south toward Edith Creek. Along the Black Creek Road previous firing operations are progressing as planned toward the main fire, reducing the risk of the fire moving south across the road. Crews and heavy equipment continue to remove standing dead trees along Black Creek Road for firefighter safety. Heavy equipment work continues on primary and alternate firelines for access and control lines to the south, north and west of the fire. Along the roadways used for firelines, work includes cutting away mid-story vegetation and thinning some of the trees on the side of the fire, reducing the potential of the fire to carry through the tree canopy across the control line. Fire crews worked late into the night to complete a chainsaw work and lay a hose line around Slapjack fire.

Today’s Activities: Scoopers and helicopters will continue supporting fire suppression where needed to support firefighters on the ground with the scoopers using Hills Creek Reservoir as a water source. Hand crews on the east side of the fire will locate and establish a fireline using water pumps and hand tools close to the fire’s edge, moving west and south to Edith Creek. Minimal impact suppression tactics will be used within the wilderness. Fireline construction along Forest Roads 1928 and further south to State Highway 58 will continue for several days. Firecrews and helicopters continue holding the five-acre Slapjack fire within firelines.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place. Weather: Fire activity may pick up in the afternoon with low relative humidity anticipated to be 30-35% in the afternoon and possible wind gusts from the west up to 15 mph.

Closures: An Area Closure is in place for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake itself, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place. Huckleberry Flats OHV Park is closed to provide access for firefighters and equipment working within the area.

Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas.

Smoke: Smoke Forecast Outlooks are available at https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook.
