The 90by30 child abuse prevention initiative has several open seats for its upcoming (virtual) Roots of Empathy instructor training beginning Sept. 28.“We hope to fill them with volunteers eager to help today’s children become more empathetic adults,” said Sara Loveless, associate director of the initiative. “This school-based program reduces bullying and aggression, and promotes prosocial behavior in kids.“Delivery during the 2021-22 school year may be in-person or virtual. Training is available at no cost to volunteers.”Headquartered at the University of Oregon, the Lane County program called 90by30 draws its name from its ambitious goal: Reduce child abuse in Lane County 90 percent by 2030. The initiative’s premise is that child abuse is preventable. Its mantra is “A Connected Child Is a Protected Child.”“Please share my contact information with anyone interested in a no-commitment conversation about what it means to be a Roots of Empathy instructor,” Loveless added. “As one of our Lane County instructors said, ‘It’s worth every minute; the biggest impact you can have with your time!'”Loveless can be reached at the University of Oregon at 1244 Walnut St. in Eugene. Her phone number is 541-346-7484.“Please help us share this unique volunteer opportunity to help change the world, one child at a time,” she said.
