By JOY KINGSBURY/for The Herald — The Church of the Nazarene, pastored by Mark Pounds for the past six years, is minister to a busy, bustling church congregation of approximately 170. The church has become a beacon of outreach for the Oakridge/Westfir area. Mark has been ministering to his flocks in different locations for some thirty-nine years. He is married to Kathryn, who teaches music in the Oakridge schools.
The Nazarene’s find it very important to support the communities. They have a long list of outreach programs including providing meals for the Warming Center, a food pantry for the general population, among the many others listed here. Their church is here for your spiritual, emotional, and physical needs and are prepared to serve you.
Pastor Mark welcomes all persons to attend services. Services are each Sunday morning at 9:45 for Bible study and 11:00 AM for worship service for adults and children. There is a Youth Group for 6th to 12th graders on Sunday at 4:30 PM in the afternoon, with a meal, Bible lessons and Games. The membership is growing with fifty students currently enrolled.

- Sponsoring of fellowship of Christian athletes at Oakridge Jr High

- Help firefighters during fire season
- Fitness group for the community

George Custer lives in Oakridge with his wife Sayre. George is a former smokejumper from his hometown of Cave Junction, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. and ran a construction company in Southern California. George assumed the volunteer duties as the Editor of the Highway 58 Herald in 2022. He loves riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, building all things wood, and playing drums on the weekends in his office.
