One hundred eighty golfers and many of their families came to compete and watch the annual Circle Bar Shootout this last weekend.

What can I say? We live in Oregon. A little rain, or even an occasional downpour doesn’t stop golfers in these parts. The sun did come out, off and on, over the course (literally) during the weekend’s tournament. Considering how the weather has been treating us lately, I believe those in attendance felt grateful to have any sunshine at all.

This tournament has a local history

The tournament was first organized by Paul and Carol Slaven twenty-nine years ago in memory of their son Ron. In 2008, the event was handed off to the Circle Bar Association. Last year’s event earned the Club $12,000. The final receipts for this year’s tournament were not available at the time of publishing.

No more shotguns

Gerry Snyder, current president of Circle Bar’s Board of Directors, explained how the tournament was organized. Two teams of five started out at each hole. They all start at the same time. Many “shootout” tournaments used to start by the sound of a shotgun blast. Hence, the name a “shotgun start”. Though this practice is no longer in use, it’s still called a shotgun start.

This weekend’s event started the ‘A’,’B’, and ‘C’ flights at seven and twelve-thirty on both Saturday and Sunday.

When the weather’s nice in Oakridge, it’s really nice. Golfers, family members, and spectators gather at the clubhouse during the Shootout.
