By BEN OLSON/for The Herald — It’s been a wild ride, but my vacation is almost over. By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be back in Oakridge, relearning how to be a responsible, organized member of the community again. I think I can do it.
I see that no one picked up the mantle as the new entertainment writer for the Herald while I was gone, so I’ll jump right back in, like nothing has changed.
Down West of East county
At the Dexter Lake Club there will be costume karaoke this Thursday, October 27. I don’t have all the details. Perhaps you are supposed to dress up like the artist whose songs you are singing. That sounds like a lot of work. Just wear whatever costume you’d like, and have fun. The show gets started around 6:30. I’ll be on stage Friday evening, October 28, beginning at 6:00, playing all the new songs I have learned while I was on the road, accompanying myself with my new instrument, the zither. Just kidding- I’ll be playing my guitar.
On Sunday evening Brian Chevalier will be hosting the open mic and jam session. Everyone will have a chance to get up and sing some songs or jam along. Festivities begin a little after 6 p.m.
The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar and the adjoining Rattlesnake BBQ serves appetizers, sandwiches and full dinners. There is no cover charge for the live entertainment. For more information, call 541 581 3000.
Howl it up at the Crane, in costume of course
At the 3 Legged Crane in Uptown Oakridge, the open mics will resume again this Thursday, October 27. I’ll be there with the old upright bass and my guitar, ready and able to play along with all the pickers and singers who stop by. Things get rolling by 7 p.m. and end at 9ish. On Saturday, October 29 there will be a Halloween costume party, beginning at 7 p.m., complete with dance music, spooky food specials and a costume contest, with judging at 8 p.m. This promises to be fun for goblins of all ages.
The 3 Legged Crane has a fine line of craft beers, some made right there and others from select microbreweries around Oregon. They have an appetizer and sandwich menu, and sometimes some unusually delectable desserts. There is no cover for live music at the 3 Legged Crane.
If there’s music somewhere, let Ben know
That’s all I’ve got for this week. Next week, in addition to my report on where the live music is happening, I’ll revisit the karaoke scene in the Highway 58 corridor. If you know of a live music event happening in our readership area, please drop me a line with the details, and I’d be happy to put out the word. Support live music and the musicians who make it.
