By BEN OLSON/for The Herald  —  I stopped at the Corner Bar for a quick one on the way home from my gig at the ski hill on Saturday afternoon. As a reporter, I was trying to ferret out some information for my next entertainment column. “Hey Rob, anything going on for music coming up?” “We got a band tonight, in fact,” he said. I responded, “I wish you’d tell me about these things so that I could give them some ink in my column.”

I enjoyed my drink and took in the ambiance. I had good intentions to get back into town after 8 o’clock to hear the band, but I knew it wouldn’t happen. My wife was having some folks over for dinner and by the time they left, it would be my bedtime. I did, however, get a chance to hear Eli Pierzina at the Dexter Lake Club on Friday and it was most enjoyable. Now I’ll get to write some nice things about him next time he’s scheduled to play.

Our readers want to know

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not much of a reporter- if I was, George would send me out to report on events of greater importance than people playing guitars. I have said previously that club owners who want free publicity in my column should call, text, or email the information they’d like to see in print. I’m pretty easy that way.

Always something happening at the Crane

John at the 3 Legged Crane on 1st Street in Oakridge makes it somewhat easy for me- he’s got a website 3leggedcrane.com with an entertainment calendar. If I give too much information away, there will be no need for my column. It says that there is an open mic this Thursday, January 19, which I will be hosting. Please stop by to listen or to join in. I’ll be playing my first song at 6:30 p.m.

Sidney Joseph returns to the Crane on Saturday evening, January 21. Sidney, a native Philadelphian, now living in Eugene, has a great mix of originals and cover tunes, heavy on blues and funk. The show begins at 7 p.m. The Crane has a nice selection of hand-crafted beers and ales, as well as appetizers, sandwiches and dinners on the menu. There is no cover charge for the live music.

Early weekend music at the LMB

At the Lion Mountain Bakery on Highway 58 in Oakridge, singer-songwriter Broken Horn will be on stage this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, January 20, 21 and 22, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day. Broken Horn, accompanying himself on a smart looking vintage Epiphone 335, plays country and pop songs from a bygone era, and does them all in the original keys. The Lion Mountain serves both breakfast and lunch in a relaxed, spacious atmosphere. There is no cover charge for the live music.

Great snow and a great lounge at the Pass

The Willamette Pass Resort is open for business and the conditions have been very good. In addition to all the exhilarating skiing and snowboarding, there is live music in the bar on Saturday afternoons. I’ll be playing, alternately, my guitar and my upright bass for the winter enthusiasts taking a little break from the slopes. The music runs from noon until 3 p.m.

Willamette Pass resort has a full bar and many food options, including pizza. There is no cover charge for the live music- in fact you don’t have to be a skier to be there. The bar, with a great view of the ski run to the left of the main chair lift, is a fine place to relax and take it all in. The resort is located at milepost 62 on Highway 58. Please drive with care, as the road can get icy once you get east of the tunnel.

Keep an eye open for music at the DLC

No word from Dustin at the Dexter Lake Club, just off Highway 58 by milepost 12. There have been regular acoustic acts on Friday evenings from 6 until 8 p.m. and Brian Chevalier has been running the open mic and jam session on Sundays, beginning at 6 p.m.

The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar and the adjoining Rattlesnake BBQ offers appetizers, sandwiches and dinners. There is no cover charge for the live music. For details on who’s playing, call 541 581 3000.

That’s all the information that I can provide this week. As always, if you know of a live music event in the Highway 58 corridor, please drop me a line with some details. By the way, a source who was at the Corner Bar last Saturday said that the band was rockin’ and that kid could really play the guitar. Next time they’re in town, I’ll try to give you a little advanced notice so you can put that on your entertainment calendar.
