By BEN OLSON/for The Herald  —  When I stopped for a nightcap at the Corner Bar a few days ago, Rob had to show me his latest toy. It appeared to be a central air conditioning unit but was, in fact, a 1000 watt sub-woofer.

The Stewart Roadhouse Band will get to add to their bottom end with it this Saturday evening, May 27. A popular musical group in the Highway 58 corridor for many years, the Stewart Roadhouse Band knows how to rock you. If you go, be ready to dance.

The Corner has a full bar and a number of entrees on the menu. They’re located on 1st Street in uptown Oakridge.

Caveman Dave at the Crane

Just up the street is the 3 Legged Crane, a classic Oregon brewpub. This Saturday, May 27, Caveman Dave will be making his debut on the mainstage. A versatile singer-songwriter, Dave plays music in preschools and pubs. He tours extensively and has a number of albums to his credit. More information can be found at his Facebook page, caveman Dave, and Instagram, @cavemandaveiscool. Showtime is 7 pm.

I’ll be running the open mic on Thursday evening, May 25. As always, I’ll be hoping to see some ambitious pickers walk through the door carrying instrument cases. It makes my job so much easier, or at least more interesting. I’ll be strumming that first chord at 6:30. The 3 Legged Crane brews much of their own beer, and what they get from other breweries is pretty tasty as well. There are appetizers, sandwiches and dinners on the menu

The LMB: more than a bakery

After spending last weekend on a sabbatical, Broken Horn will be returning to the Lion Mountain Bakery to play classic rock, pop and country tunes this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 26, 27 and 28. The music begins at 11 am and runs until 1 pm each day. The Lion Mountain serves breakfast and lunch. In addition to being a music venue, they also serve as a library, art gallery and home to the Zero Clearance Theater. The Lion Mountain Bakery is located on Highway 58 in Oakridge.

The beer garden at the DLC will be center stage

Taking the stage at the Dexter Lake Club this Friday, May 26, will be a surprise. At press time, I don’t have that information, but that person, or those persons will be playing from 6 until 8 pm. On Sunday evening, Brian Chevalier and friends will be hosting the open mic and jam session. That may be moving to the beer garden out back with good weather in the forecast. The open mic gets started shortly after 6 pm.

The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar, and the adjoining Rattlesnake BBQ has appetizers, sandwiches and dinners on the menu. They’re located just off Highway 58, near milepost 12, on the outskirts of Dexter. For more information, call 541 581 3000.

There’s even music at the Farmers’ Market

The Oakridge Westfir Farmers’ Market takes place every Friday from 3 until 6 pm. This Friday, to make your shopping at the market more enjoyable, I’ll be playing organic songs, accompanying myself on my sustainable wood ukulele or my free-ranging bass fiddle. It’s a great opportunity to buy locally grown and produced food items. The market takes place next to the Methodist church on 1st Street in uptown Oakridge.

No cover charge at any of this week’s venues

The one thing that all these venues have in common is that no one has a cover charge to get in and hear that great live music. Karaoke fans, please put this in your calendar. Wednesdays at the Loggers Den in Oakridge, Thursdays at the Dexter Lake Club, Saturdays at the Oakridge Moose Lodge and Saturdays at the Corner Bar, but not this Saturday.

I’ll close with the words of Spock- not the Doctor, but the mister from the planet Vulcan. “Live long and prosper.”
