By BEN OLSON/for The Herald — Yeah, it’s me, one more time. When I was in college, I paid a lot of attention to music, but I had no illusions that I could be a musician myself. Sure, I could play a few songs on my acoustic guitar. Someone who knew that referred me to a band that was forming and needed a singer. I remember being quite nervous about having to sing in front of other people. Showing up at their rehearsal, I was given the lyrics to two songs off the Eagles latest album. I was to sing “Victim of Love” and “Already Gone”. I didn’t impress anyone enough to get to be a lead singer. My entry into the music biz would be delayed until I stepped in to be a bass player 8 or 9 years later. Writing one more entertainment column after I said I was done brought up memories of those times and “Already Gone”.
I’m still here and will be playing for one more Oakridge/Westfir Farmers Market before I go. The market takes place every Friday from 3 until 6 pm in the yard next to the Methodist Church on 1st Street in uptown Oakridge. Shop locally and support the farmers bringing you fresh healthy produce.
Dueling acoustics Saturday at the Crane
I’ll be hosting one more open mic at the 3 Legged Crane before I skip town. That will be taking place this Thursday, June 8, beginning at 6:30 pm. It would make me quite happy to see some local pickers and singers stop by to join in the merriment. On Saturday evening, June 10, Steve Goodbar and Jerry Zybach will be taking the stage, beginning at 7 pm. I found a Facebook clip of them performing, and I like what I see. Two acoustic guitars covering a lively, jazzy tune. I’ll be in the audience for that show. The 3 Legged Crane is located on 1st Street in uptown Oakridge. They always have a choice selection of beers and ales appropriate for the season. Appetizers, sandwiches and dinners are on the menu, as well as a daily special.
Broken Horn will be back on stage at the Lion Mountain Bakery this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 9, 10 and 11. He plays a mix of tunes that cover everything from Hank Williams classic country to the Beatles and the British invasion. Show time is 11 am until 1 pm each day. As I mentioned last week, check out the video of him playing an event in Eugene with his band. Go to Broken Horn from Oakridge. Full Band. The Lion Mountain serves both breakfast and lunch. In addition to a regular old cup of joe, they have all the fancy coffee drinks that you could find at Starbucks. They’re located on Highway 58 in Oakridge.
Live outdoor music Friday at the DLC
Ripple Vision will be on the stage in the beer garden at Dexter Lake Club this Friday, June 9, with the groovy sounds beginning at 6 pm. The 6 piece band from Eugene will be bringing their psychedelic space-funk to Dexter in hopes of getting everyone in attendance out on the dance floor. On Sunday evening, Brian Chevalier and friends will be hosting the regular open mic and jam session. That gets started shortly after 6 pm. The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar, and the adjoining Rattlesnake BBQ has appetizers, sandwiches and dinners on the menu. They’re located just off Highway 58 near milepost 12 in the quiet little burg of Dexter.
I hope you all have a most joyous, smoke-free summer. I’ll be sending the occasional post from the road. Hasta luego.
