Entertainment report: Week ending 3/26

By BEN OLSON/for The Herald  —  Eli Pierzina will be the featured act at the Dexter Lake Club this Friday, March 24. Eli’s mix of original and cover tunes defies easy description. It leans toward country, with powerful vocals and a great percussive guitar technique. I’ve heard him twice, and I like what I hear. He’ll be playing from 6 until 8 pm.

On Sunday, Brian Chevalier and friends will be hosting the weekly jam session and open mic. That starts at 6 pm. It’s a great chance to get up and sing a song or two with a live band backing you up. The Dexter Lake Club is located just off Highway 58 by milepost 12. They have a full bar and the adjoining Rattlesnake BBQ has appetizers, sandwiches and dinners on the menu. There is no cover charge for the live music. For more details, call 541 581 3000.

Twenty miles east on Highway 58 at the Lion Mountain Bakery in Oakridge, Broken Horn will be back playing this weekend. From 11 am until 1 pm this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 24, 25 and 26, he will be taking you on a trip down memory lane. Many tunes on his song list were learned while he began playing music in the Los Angeles area in the 60’s. The Lion Mountain serves breakfast and lunch in a relaxed, spacious atmosphere. There is no cover charge for the music.

Cross Current to perform at the 3 Legged Crane

The 3 Legged Crane, on 1st Street in old Oakridge will be featuring Eugene folk trio Cross Current this Saturday, March 25. With two guitars, a mandolin and three voices, this group evokes the classic age of the folk music movement. I was out of town the last time they played at the Crane, so I’m looking forward to having a pint and giving them a listen. Although I’m not certain, I have good reason to believe that they do all original songs.

Cross Current begins playing at 7 pm. On Thursday, March 23, I’ll be orchestrating the open mic, with the help of my Song Dawgz guitarist, Gary Battles. The open mic begins at 6:30 pm. Stop in and share a song with everyone- don’t be shy. The 3 Legged Crane has a great selection of beers and ales, some brewed right there. They also have appetizers, sandwiches and dinners on the menu. There is no cover charge for the live music.

Great snow and music at the Pass

Besides offering great skiing and snowboarding, the Willamette Pass Resort will be the scene of live music in the bar this Saturday and Sunday, March 25 and 26. I’ll be doing the singing, accompanying myself with, alternatively, the guitar, ukulele and upright bass. The music runs from noon until 3 pm each day. The bar also affords a great view of the wide, steep ski run just west of the high-speed chair lift. In addition to having a full bar, Willamette Pass Resort has a number of food options. There is no cover charge for the live music. The resort is located at milepost 62 on Highway 58.

Karaoke around town

Karaoke happens on Wednesdays at the Loggers Den in Oakridge, Thursdays at the Dexter Lake Club, Saturdays at the Moose Lodge in Oakridge and most weekends at the Corner Bar in old town Oakridge. That is all that I have to report this week. I’m looking for live music moving outside at some of the venues. Of course it needs to warm up a bit and the days get a little longer. Please support live music and the musicians who make it!
