Entertainment report: Wherever you are, remember to dance

By BEN OLSON/for The Herald  —  I have a brother who, like myself, lives in the mountains. He enjoys mountain life with a lot less oxygen than I am used to, living at nine thousand feet in elevation. He sent me a photo last week showing the surrounding peaks covered with a coat of fresh snow. The question, of course, is this the last snowfall from last winter or the first one for next winter?

Lighting it up at Deep Woods

Stoner will be emerging from hibernation and playing their first show of the year at the Deep Woods Distillery this Saturday evening, July 16. Singer-songwriter Jonathan Chiarella will be teaming up with his longtime bandmate, drummer Michael Shawn, to bring you an evening of original songs. Rounding out the Stoner touring band will be Forest Shroeder on guitar, and yours truly playing the bass.

Expect an appropriate light show. Sorry, no fog machine for Saturday’s event.

Popular act TBA will be opening the show at 5 and Stoner will take the stage a little after 6. There will be a nominal cover charge for this outdoor event. Mick and Cindy will be serving up drinks made from the delicious and nutritiously distilled Deep Woods products. As of press time, the food would also be provided by the versatile TBA food services.

Dawgs, Cajun, and Olson at the Crane

A few blocks further east on 1st Street in Oakridge is the 3 Legged Crane, our local brewpub. The Song Dawgz will be playing and hosting the open mic this Thursday, July 14, from 7 until 9 p.m. If you’ve got a hankering to get up on stage and sing or play a little, this is your chance.

On Friday night, Kelly Thibodeaux and friends will be playing that good-timing Cajun music. It’ll make you want to dance. Expect the music to start around 7 p.m.

On Mondays, I’m on stage, armed only with my upright bass and a microphone to sing through. I’m always open to having fellow musicians sit in with me- the more, the merrier. I get started around 6 p.m.  The 3 Legged Crane has a sandwich and dinner menu and a wide array of hand-crafted beers and ales. There is no cover charge for these musical events.

Down on Highway 58 in Oakridge at the Lion Mountain Bakery, singer-songwriter Broken Horn will be taking the stage this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 15, 16 and 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day. Broken Horn plays an enjoyable mix of classic rock, pop, and country tunes. I hold court on Sunday mornings, beginning at 9 a.m., with my ukulele, playing my eclectic mix of old chestnuts. The Lion Mountain is a spacious venue and serves both a breakfast and lunch menu. There is no cover charge for live music.

Watch for mosquitoes up on the mountain

Odell Lake Lodge, out on the east end of our readership area, will be featuring Etouffee- that’s Cajun fiddler Kelly Thibodeaux and friends out on the deck this Saturday evening, July 16, from six until 8 p.m. With a relaxing setting on the eastern shore of Odell Lake, the Lodge serves dinners and has a full bar. There is no cover charge for the live music. It can be a little cooler over on the other side of the pass, so make sure to bring a jacket and hat.

Schedule changes at Dexter Lake Club

There have been some scheduling changes at the Dexter Lake Club since last week’s report. The Tuesday jams are taking a hiatus and now music will fill the air on Wednesdays. I’ll be on the stage with my guitar in the beer garden at 5:30 this Wednesday, July 13. When I get done, Craig Sorseth will be taking over, playing his delightful song list of Americana tunes. On Sunday evenings, Brian Chevalier runs the open mic and jam session. That gets started shortly after 6 p.m.

The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar and the Rattlesnake BBQ serves sandwiches and dinners, both inside and in the shady beer garden out back. For more information call 541 581 3000.

Concerts in The Park series returns

The following week, Oakridge will see the return of the Green Waters Park free concert series. More on that in next week’s entertainment report. As we roll into the heart of our Oregon summer, remember to stay hydrated and put on some sunscreen. Get out of the house to hear a little live music, as well.
