Entertainment report for the week ending August 21

By BEN OLSON/for The Herald  —  As I sat in the Lion Mountain Bakery this morning, playing my ukulele to entertain those having a cup of Joe and a little breakfast, I noticed the same thing I notice every Sunday morning. Traffic whizzing by, going 15 or 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. At least they’ve slowed down a bit from the 75 or 80 they were doing just a couple of miles ago.

I’ve been inserting my opinion in this column every week since I began writing it.  I’ll briefly give you my take on this subject. Oakridge will have a heck of a time attracting any new businesses along Highway 58 as long as it resembles the straightaway on a stock car track. I have not seen anyone pulled over for a traffic violation in this town since last fall. Making people drive the speed limit through Oakridge doesn’t have to turn our community into a speed trap. However, it will make it safer for pedestrians, bikers and motorists turning in and out of local businesses.

First Street music for the week

The Deep Woods Distillery on 1st Street in Oakridge will be back hosting live music after taking the previous Saturday off. Cuchulain will be making a return to Oakridge on Saturday, August 20 to play the mainstage at the Insensitive Wetlands. Cuchulain (Ka-hoo-lin), his real, given name, plays a wonderful mix of original tunes and eclectic covers. The show will get started around 5:30ish. As of press time, the food concession has yet to be determined, but the cocktails will be mixed with spirits distilled on site. There will be a nominal cover charge to gain entry to the festival grounds.

At the 3 Legged Crane, a couple blocks further east on 1st Street, the weekend starts on Thursday evening, August 18. I’ll be running the open mic that night, beginning at 7 p.m. Over the last few weeks, I’ve had to deal with banjos, bagpipes, pennywhistles and saxophones. Why should this Thursday be any different? On Friday evening, August 19, one man band Arthur Buezos will be making the trip from Klamath Falls to make his debut in Oakridge. It looks to be a show that I won’t want to miss.

On Monday night, I’ll be on stage with nothing but my upright bass and a growing list of songs that work in that format. I’ll get started around 6:30. The 3 Legged Crane features beers and ales brewed right there in the building, as well as select beers from other area microbreweries. They have a lunch and dinner menu. There is no cover charge for the live music.

Bakery serves music as well

I’ll be playing my ukulele at the Lion Mountain Bakery on Highway 58 in Oakridge this Sunday morning from 9 until 10:30 a.m. As I have noted before, this is the earliest you can hear any secular music on a Sunday anywhere in Lane County. This week it’s going to be all Beatles. I’m thinking I can play different Beatle songs for an hour and a half. The Lion Mountain serves both a breakfast and lunch menu, and there is no cover charge for the music.

Over the mountain and down to the valley

On the other side of the pass, at Odell Lake Lodge, Kelly Thibodeaux and his band Etouffee will be playing on the deck this Saturday, August 20, from 6 until 8 p.m. Enjoy dinner and drinks while listening to the infectious rhythms of Kelly’s Cajun music. It’s all original tunes, by the way. The Lodge has a full bar and serves dinner and sandwiches in the dining room or on the deck overlooking Odell Lake. There is no cover charge for the music.

At the other end of our coverage area, the Dexter Lake Club will be having live music out in the beer garden this Wednesday afternoon, August 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Craig Sorseth, with his extensive song list of Americana tunes, and Eli Pierzina will be on the bill, although I don’t have information as to who will be opening. On Sunday, August 21, Brian Chevalier and friends will be putting on a jam session and open mic in the beer garden, starting at 6 p.m. The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar, and the adjoining Rattlesnake BBQ serves appetizers, sandwiches, and dinners. There is no cover charge for the live music. For more information call 541 581 3000.

As for the speeders…

I know that I got on my high horse at the beginning of the column with my comments about speeders tearing through our town. I am, though, serious as a heart attack in my feelings about what this lack of enforcement means to Oakridge, and I’m certain that I’m not the only one that feels this way. My philosopher friend Bumper once opined to me, “If they want people to drive 35, then they need to make the speed limit 20.” No, they just need to enforce the speed limit that they decided, in all their wisdom, was a safe speed to travel through our town. Now, get out of the house this week and listen to a little live music.
