Entertainment roudup: Back in the saddle again in God’s Country

By BEN OLSON/For The Herald — As my alert readers may have noticed, I haven’t submitted an entertainment column since early June. My excuse is that I returned to my boyhood hometown to see some old friends and get some steady work playing my guitar. Since I last played in Oakridge, I’ve set up and torn down 67 times at various hootenannies, goat-ropings, birthday bashes and nursing homes. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. While I was pouring my heart out on stage, my Wisconsin audiences were busy gobbling bratwursts and deep-fried cheese curds, washing it down with immense quantities of light beer.

I did learn a number of new tunes to replace ones that I seem to have forgotten.

One of the musicians that provided a soundtrack for my life recently passed away. Jimmy Buffett’s long career as an entertainer, paralleling my entire adult life, provided a soundtrack that touched all the bases. My wardrobe reflects my adherence to the “Gulf and Western” style that he was all about. He will be missed, but he would have wanted us to keep the party going.

This Thursday evening, September 14, I’ll be resuming the open mics at the 3 Legged Crane with a tribute to Jimmy Buffett. The entire show will be songs written by Buffett or tunes that he covered by other artists in concert or on records. Showtime is at 7 pm. Please bring a Buffett song to sing, and dress appropriately. I hope to see Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops, parrots are optional.

On Friday night, September 15, the Peter Wilde Experience will be returning to the Crane. Peter will be joined by Michael Roderick and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Holtschlag. As always, great fun will be had. The music begins at 7 p.m. The 3 Legged Crane is located on First Street in uptown Oakridge. They serve sandwiches, dinners and a great selection of hand-crafted beers and ales.

Broken Horn will be playing guitar and singing tunes from the golden age of rock and roll this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 15, 16 and 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day at the Lion Mountain Bakery. The Lion Mountain is located on Highway 58 in Oakridge. They serve both breakfast and lunch.

The Dexter Lake Club by milepost 12 will be featuring Eli Pierzina this Friday evening, September 15. With the forecast calling for sunny and pleasant weather, the music will take place in the comfort of the beer garden out back, from 6 until 8 p.m. Eli plays a great mix of soulful country originals and covers. The Dexter Lake Club has a full bar and serves appetizers, sandwiches and dinners.

That’s all I’ve got for you this week. I’ll be out doing some investigative reporter work this week to get everyone up to speed on where the karaoke outbreaks are occurring in our readership area. It’s good to be back.
