By BEN OLSON/For The Herald — This will be my last dispatch from the road. It has been quite a trip. I got to watch several Packer games with fellow Packer fans and see them win. I hiked and boated at the height of the Wisconsin autumn colors and got to play a lot of music with old friends.
Tomorrow morning at first light I will be pointing my truck in a westward direction and making my way back toward Oakridge. Weather permitting, I’ll be back in time to see Mick Garvin’s imposing trebuchet fling pumpkins the length of a long par 3. That will be taking place on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the site of the old Hines Mill in Westfir from noon until 4 p.m. during Day One of the community’s Headwaters Harvest Festival.
A Halloween movie night is also on tap in Westfir on Saturday the 30th. Join the fun at the Westfir Portal (over the covered bridge) to watch the family-friendly classic “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” at 7 p.m. Snacks will be provided and there is no charge for admission, but movie-goers should bring chairs. The event is “weather-dependent,” according to Westfir City Recorder Nicole Tritten.
On Halloween Sunday there will be more Headwaters Harvest Festival fun, including live music, at Greenwaters Park in Oakridge from noon until 6 p.m. My editor has told me that there will be a special feature offering more details on these events elsewhere in the Highway 58 Herald beginning on Thursday
Live music will be back at the 3 Legged Crane on Halloween night, beginning at 6 p.m. Yours truly will be providing the soundtrack for the Halloween festivities. I’m expecting some special guests to join me on the main stage that night. I shouldn’t have to say this, but, please costume up.
Down at the Dexter Lake Club, there will be karaoke as usual on Thursday night, beginning around 6 p.m. The regular Sunday jam session and open mic will not be taking place on Halloween Sunday. I was told on the phone that they will be closed that night. They will be back in action for the Tuesday night acoustic jam and open mic on Nov. 2, beginning at 6 pm. That event will be hosted by Craig Sorseth and Brian Chevalier. There is no cover charge for these events. Call 541 581 3000 for information.
Broken Horn will be playing at the Lion Mountain Bakery this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29, 30 and 31. Showtime is 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. There is no cover charge and breakfast and lunch are both on the menu while the music is on. I’ll be in there on Halloween morning from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. playing my ukulele. The request lines will be open.
I’ll be driving for the next three days, taking a day off from the road to do another concert at my mother’s assisted living facility in Utah before making the last push to Oakridge on Friday. Stay well and keep smiling!
