Springfield, Ore., Nov. 9, 2022 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service recognize the service of our nation’s veterans by waiving standard amenity fees for all visitors to national forest and grassland day-use areas on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The Willamette National Forest honors our veterans for their service and encourages all to take advantage of the fee-free day on our forest.
The fee waiver includes many Forest Service picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers. Fees for camping, cabin rentals, or other permits still apply. Fees will continue to be charged at recreation sites operated by concessionaires unless the individual manager chooses to participate.
Fee-free public lands access, including access to National Forests and Grasslands, is available year-round to U.S. military service members and their families, veterans, and Gold Star family members. The Interagency Military Pass is available at no cost to all active-duty military personnel and their families. For more information about interagency passes valid on National Forests and Grasslands, visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/passes-permits.
Know before you go. Check for recent fire activity, closures, and weather conditions on the Willamette National Forest before heading out to the forest. Be aware that recently fire-affected areas continue to contain hazards, even after the fire is out. You can check road conditions at https://tripcheck.com/. Prepare an alternate route in case you need to change your plans. Understand that cell phone service may not be available in some forest areas, and many Forest Service roads are not maintained for low-clearance vehicles – drivers routed onto unmaintained roads by GPS maps may get stranded. Weather conditions can change quickly, especially in higher elevations. Make sure to pack extra food, water and essentials when traveling to the forest.
