In early 2019 the owner of a popular Oakridge restaurant discovered that someone had been using the establishment’s public wi-fi system to download images of child pornography.
An ensuing police investigation led to the arrest of a 68-year-old Oakridge man, Randall DeWitt Simons, on 15 counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse
Simons, who once photographed child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey, was convicted on all 15 counts Sept. 1 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Sept. 17 in Lane County Circuit Court.
While awaiting trial, he was released from jail in March 2020 after his attorney filed a motion citing Simons’ heart problems and his age in a motion expressing fear he would contract COVID-19.
