By ANDREA NEEDHAM/for The Herald  —  They say dogs are man’s best friend, but that does not mean that our canine (or kitty) companions are meant to live the same way we do. They are not. Our animals have natural instincts, and it’s up to us to help them live as close to nature as possible so that they can be at their healthiest and happiest best. Keep reading for tips from Highway 58 Herald on how to do just that.

Consider Their Food

Speaking of your vet, all beef dog food is sure to please them, as well as your pet. Look for food that’s high in protein and crude fat; you may consider this option, which is free of fillers but full of taste. If you’re not sure which brand is best, consider buying a trial pack of each option to see what your pet loves best.

Calm your Pet with CBD

CBD, or cannabidiol, has calming and anti-inflammatory properties that are great for older pets, especially aging, sick, or anxious cats. As an all-natural supplement, CBD can be a healthy part of your cat’s daily routine. Many veterinarians advocate the use of CBD for dogs and cats.

Try Natural Remedies

Even if you’re already using CBD and other natural supplements, you also want to look for homeopathic remedies, essential oils, and other nature-based products to relieve pain, promote joint function, and even improve your pet’s energy levels.

Go Toxin-Free

This is a big one. Creating a toxin-free environment is crucial for your pet’s overall health and well-being. Just as we’re diligent about keeping our children away from chemicals and other domestic dangers, we have to take the same care and put it toward our pets. Avoid using chemical cleaning products, air fresheners, and pesticides. These can be harmful when ingested or even inhaled. Consider using pet (and kid) safe alternatives, such as lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar. Good Housekeeping offers lots of options for DIY products that work.

Strap on Your Sneakers

An all-natural lifestyle for your pet goes far beyond their diet and environment. Just like for you, regular exercise and mental stimulation will help keep them at their peak. Spend quality time with your favorite furry friend by engaging in activities that match both their and your interests. Go on walks. Play interactive games, or even take a hike or go boating. Before you head out, make sure that you have the right gear – The Spruce Pets offers 23 harness options for your favorite outdoor companion.

 Go Green When Grooming

Anything that goes down your drain can be considered a contaminant. This applies to your grooming products, such as shampoo. Instead of buying something off the bottom shelf as cheaply as possible, consider investing in natural options, including waterless shampoos. You also want to talk to your veterinarian about natural options for keeping your pet’s ears and teeth clean.

Your dog’s natural instincts include everything from chewing to tugging to hunting. While you may not be able to indulge all of their primitive predispositions, you can feed them, clean them, and keep them healthy the way nature intended. From supplements, such as CBD, to all beef food and safe cleaners, today’s tips can help you bring your pet back to nature and live as close to their wolf relatives as possible without losing their domestic dominance.
