Highway 58 Herald’s board of directors has begun considering candidates to fill an opening on the nonprofit board following the May 3 resignation of Sandy Thoele.
The former co-publisher/owner of Junction City and Veneta’s weekly newspapers, Thoele was among the founding directors who helped launch The Herald early this year. Now that the news site is up and running, she said she is stepping down to return to the retired life and traveling with her husband, Mike Thoele, with whom she once published the weeklies.
The Herald’s president, George Custer, thanked Thoele and praised her service.
“Please understand how important it was that you signed on for the time you were with us,” Custer wrote in a letter accepting Thoele’s resignation. “You helped us get off the ground, and we all appreciated your support.”
Editor Doug Bates expressed similar sentiments.
“The sun is out, the flowers are abloom, and Mike and Sandy have a new camper van that needs to hit the road,” he said. “My gratitude to Sandy is rivaled only by my envy.”
Custer and Bates said the board will be drawing up a slate of prospective replacements for Thoele on the seven-member board. Candidates with experience at fund-raising and grant writing will be of particular interest to The Herald as the online news site moves forward.
