By LAUREN TARR/for The Herald — The Impressionists broke tradition, and gained their name, by taking small canvases outdoors to capture light. Van Gogh and Cezanne developed their individual visual languages this way. Monet showed light changing on simple haystacks in a stellar show at MoMA decades ago.
The Oakridge Council for Art and Culture organized our first Paint Out. Terry DeLoach, born and raised in Oakridge, judged the show at Sweetvine on September 29.
Barbara Council Burney won first prize for Devil’s Backbone; a sensitive painting of mountains folded over water. Oil paints give Barbara time to render scenes. Liquin and walnut oil help dry paint. Barbara’s painting called Oakridge Industrial Park Sunset also received an award.
Susan Bryant won second place for Three Miles up Salmon Creek, in acrylic. Susan made her first art at the age of two; she drew a candlestick next to a picture in a TV Guide. She brings memories to canvas to make people smile.
All prizes were sponsored by Casey’s RV Park, Tired Dog Ranch and Lone Wolf Air B&B.
