The interior of the Belknap Bridge, photographed in March 2021.
A feature story on the Aufderheide Scenic Byway, published in The Herald on May 22, reported incorrectly that the Belknap Bridge, a historic covered structure over the McKenzie River near Rainbow, had been destroyed in the Holiday Farm wildfire that ravaged the McKenzie Valley last September. KVAL-TV of Eugene and other news outlets broadcast the erroneous reports last fall and they were picked up by social media. Ken Engelman, publisher of the McKenzie River Reflections newspaper, says he has been trying to correct that misinformation ever since. The Belknap Bridge, shown here in Engelman’s recent photo, was not destroyed or damaged in the fires. The Herald has corrected its May 22 story.
