By SU STELLA/for The Herald — It is just in time to start thinking of the events in Uptown Oakridge that will help make your holiday shopping a breeze and invest in your future with art. Not only will there be shopping but at times there will be art demonstrations and even live music.
First Friday Art Walk
Bundle up and bring your family for the First Friday Art Walk along East 1st Street on December 2nd from 5 – 7pm. Enjoy a warm beverage from one of the available shops and listen to holiday hits while you shop.
Mane Street Cafe
Mane Street Coffee, located two doors east of the Corner Bar and Grill, will feature a compilation of all the artists that showed there this year in case you didn’t get to see them when they were featured now’s your chance!
Robert Woodson woodworking, Sissy Cutchen with her folk style paintings and Rebel Wilder with her nature inspired creations.
The Uptown Building
The lobby of the Uptown Building, across As Street from City Hall, will feature the scenic and artistic photographs by Keven Gobelman. Kathy Ariosa will have a variety of her collages. Get inspired by Iris Betts Barratt awards for every occasion. There will be refreshments to warm you up, as well.
Art Works Gallery
Art Works Gallery is located at the corner of East 1st and Ash catty-corner from City Hall. The gallery has a wonderful mix of local art for both the men and the women in your family. You can find everything from amazing paintings, cool crocheted wall hangings, holiday ornaments and local photographs.
Stay cozy with knit scarves and wraps from Hexagon House, or take home a few skeins of hand dyed yarn by Wren Somerville for your own creations. You can dress up your house with fun throw pillows created by Sissy Cutchen. There are blown glass orbs and marbles for decoration too.
For the man in your life there is a variety of wood plaques by Ron Nix. Curt Harville has made gnomes that delight all ages, and Robert Woodson makes wood and stone bookends as well as coffee tables and bookcases.
For those kitchen enthusiasts, Su Stella has crafted spoon rests and taco holders. Several artists have their mugs and bowls ready for your holiday table. Doug Glascock’s decorative wood bowls and wine stoppers add to the holiday festivities.
Everyone loves jewelry, Holly Olson works with semi-precious stones, while Kai Botak explores Oregon for rocks and findings for her earrings. Curt Harville also makes silver rings. The Copper Raven creates bright enamel jewelry that will make you smile.
If your people are difficult to shop for, gift certificates are always available.
Pioneer Museum
Show your appreciation of all the artists in your community this holiday season. December’s Art Walk will include the Holiday Market at the Museum, be sure to take a tour while you’re there! The Holiday Market at the Museum continues on Saturday.
Sugar Plum Festival
This family favorite is back for another memory making weekend at the Elementary school on 1st Street. Stop by and shop for handcrafted jewelry. There are booths with wood crafts, home décor and beautiful garments. Bring your appetite for the delicious homemade specialties.
The festivities start Saturday from 9 to 4pm, and on Sunday from 10 until 2pm.

Art Works Gallery and The 3 Legged Crane Pub are 2 wonderful destinations to enjoy for the Sundays in December, as well.

George Custer lives in Oakridge with his wife Sayre. George is a former smokejumper from his hometown of Cave Junction, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. and ran a construction company in Southern California. George assumed the volunteer duties as the Editor of the Highway 58 Herald in 2022. He loves riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, building all things wood, and playing drums on the weekends in his office.
