You may often find Colleen Shirley, Oakridge’s new city finance director, tooling around Oregon on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

By DEAN REA/Editor/The Herald — If Oakridge’s new finance director shows up for work at City Hall riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, don’t be surprised.

Colleen Shirley learned to ride several years ago at her High Prairie home and loves to join her husband Michael for trips in the countryside and throughout Oregon.

Shirley, 47, was one of two applicants to replace Eric Kytola, who will help train Shirley until March 1. Shirley appeared before an interviewing panel before being selected Monday by City Administrator Bryan Cutchen. Her first day of work will be Feb. 14.

The world of debits-and-credits began as a learning-on-the-job experience for Shirley, who moved to Eugene from southern California and then to Junction City where she met and married Michael six years ago.

During those years she learned accounting in college classrooms and on the job while working for a number of businesses, including construction firms, Levi Strauss and two non-profits.

Meanwhile, she received an associate degree in accounting at Lane Community College, often working nights, and soon will complete a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bushnell University in Eugene.

“I feel blessed to be in Oakridge and to get this job,” she said during an interview. “I love this town, and I want to be a positive influence.”
