The Oregon Legislature has approved providing Lane County with $7.5 million toward the construction of a new, publicly owned multi-use facility at the Lane Events Center that could provide a home for the Ems baseball team, as well as other community events and activities.

“Lane County’s delegation to the Oregon Legislature consistently proves its effectiveness in Salem by identifying and lifting up transformational local projects. Their advocacy to Legislative Leadership on our behalf was critical to making a new facility at the Lane Events Center a reality,” said Lane County Administrator Steve Mokrohisky. “One of our priorities at Lane County is to create vibrant communities, and a multi-use facility would – if done right – become a center of community life in Lane County. Working through this process with the Ems, neighbors, and other community partners will ensure that we evolve this project in a way that showcases the benefits for our community, region, and state. Our goal is for the project to have unified support when it comes before the Board of County Commissioners later this year.”

The multi-use facility would also host community events, serve as the most significant outdoor concert venue in our area, as well as accommodate youth, high school, and adult baseball tournaments. Lane County and the Ems are in the process of identifying other funding sources, gathering feedback from neighbors and community organizations, and putting together a detailed cost estimate and scope for the Board of County Commissioners to consider this spring.

“The Emeralds are grateful for the hard work of our local state legislators and that of the Legislative Leadership on the County’s request for the necessary support to consider development of a multi-use facility at the Lane Events Center,” said Allan Benavides, general manager of The Emeralds. “We look forward to continuing to work with Lane County, the neighborhood, and the broader community to determine if the Lane Events Center makes sense for a multi-use facility that would also serve a as a baseball stadium for the Emeralds and local youth teams.”

The Lane Events Center is in the process of creating a master plan for the property’s future. During that process the Eugene Emeralds approached Lane County to discuss the possibility of creating a new facility to host the team because new national facility standards and more scheduled games mean the Ems will no longer be able to use PK Park. Lane County and the Ems have partnered to evaluate whether a multi-use facility is feasible.

“We so appreciate the support of the Eugene delegation: Senator Floyd Prozanski, Senator James Manning, Representative Nancy Nathanson, Representative Julie Fahey, and Representative Paul Holvey,” said Mokrohisky. “They really went to bat for us with Legislative leadership and the budget decision-makers.”
