Scores of graduates from the high schools of Oakridge and Westfir will be streaming into Oakridge next month for another in a series of hugely successful multi-year class reunions.

“This is the 22nd year of this group that Bunny Thomas Carpenter (OHS Class of 1965) started in 2000 and the ball keeps rolling,” said reunion organizer Brenda (Armstrong) Peterson (OHS Class of 1970). “In 2016, at our last reunion, we had three gentlemen in attendance who graduated in 1938.”

Currently, she said, 100 schoolmates have already registered for the July 29-31 event — about half of what has been the norm.

“It’s never too late to change your mind and attend,” she added. “You can even pay at the door.”

To pre-register and get the full reunion schedule and meal menus, contact Peterson by email at [email protected]. Oakridge-Westfir lodging is filling up fast, so pre-registration and reservations are strongly recommended

Anyone who ever attended Oakridge, Westfir and Willamette City schools is encouraged to attend. The full registration fee of $50 per individual covers all the catered meals, a required bartender, clubhouse rental, name tags, decorations, music, required on-duty custodian and cook at school, printing and mailing costs, insurance, soft drinks, snacks and more. Options are included for reduced registration fees covering few or no meals.

Friday July 29 starts the event with the gatherings of individual classes at varying locations around town. Most often there is a meal involved and the fun begins.

Saturday July 30 events begin around 9 a.m. at Oakridge High School as folks arrive at various times to visit before an assembly that starts around 11 a.m., followed by lunch served in the cafeteria.  Then it’s an all-afternoon “hang out” on the school grounds with soft drinks, iced tea, lemonade and bottled water provided at no cost.

“There is hope that our local ’60s & ’70s garage bands and musicians will get together Saturday and jam in the school auditorium,” she said.

Saturday afternoon, she said, “Some of us nap while others stay on their feet until it’s time for the no-host beer and wine bar with soft drinks and coffee still being supplied” at the Circle Bar Golf Course clubhouse.

Dinner, catered by The Mazatlan restaurant of Oakridge, will be served there around 5:30 to 6 p.m.

“Music from the ’50s, ’60s and 70’s will play in the background for listening and dancing throughout the evening as we one by one fall away to slumber,” Peterson said.

The reunion’s finale on Sunday will be a farewell brunch back at the high school. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for coffee with brunch served 8:30 to 11a.m., “providing the opportunity to catch that one mate you haven’t chatted with,” Peterson said.

“Our always scrumptious lunch and brunch is prepared and served by sisters Chelsi Rhule and Avis Southward, the granddaughters of Sam and Iona Kingrey, who were owners of the Flying A service station in Oakridge.”
