By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor/The Herald — Memorial Day is about remembering those who have served in defense of our county. We should also honor those who are serving and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the past. Whether you believe in the wars that have been fought or not, today should be about reflection.
Try to imagine, if you’ve never been there, what the individual soldier, sailor, airman, and marine must have felt when first going into combat. Brave, yes. Scared, certainly. They push on mainly because of the need to not let down their ship mates, their squad mates, and their aircrew mates.
Please try, at least today, to think of our veterans as young men and women, as parents, as sons and daughters, as brothers and sisters, and friends to many.
All who have survived the horrors of combat have had their lives impacted forever. For those who continue to serve and for those who will, I believe that we should “have their backs”.
Do I wish that there would be no more wars? Certainly. But don’t place fault or think less of your brothers and sisters who choose to serve.
