Oakridge, OR, Nov. 30, 2023 – The Willamette National Forest issued a Forest Order for the Middle Fork Ranger District that designates some areas near Oakridge for day use only by enacting restrictions that prohibit overnight camping and parking. Developed campgrounds will not be impacted. The order, which was developed with community support and public input, is in effect through Dec. 31, 2026, unless rescinded or modified sooner.
The order, which allows for day use only in specific areas from sunrise to sunset, is intended to protect public health and safety by reducing resource damage and sanitation issues associated with long-term camping, improving water quality, reducing potential wildfire ignitions near communities, and reducing user conflicts. Designating these areas as day use may also make some popular swimming holes and recreation sites more available to visitors.
Through public meetings, public scoping, and formal letters received, there was significant community engagement that included the full support of local governments.
“This Forest Order was developed in collaboration with our community and local government to address safety and access concerns,” said Middle Fork Deputy District Ranger Cameron Mitchell. “It was amazing to see our communities really spearhead this effort and work together to find positive solutions.”
Impacted areas include sections of Hwy 58, Fall Creek Road (FSR 18), North Fork Road (FSR 19), Salmon Creek Road (FSR 24), La Duke or South Bank Road (FSR 5852), Winberry Creek Road (FSR 1802-150), Shady Gap Road (FSR 5875), and Hampton Boat Launch off Hwy 58.
Law enforcement will seek voluntary compliance on the new restrictions by issuing warnings to anyone in designated areas after dark. Repeated warnings may result in fines or other charges.
