By PEGGY MARCONI — Oakridge Council for Arts and Culture, in collaboration with Singing Creek Educational Center Presents: Singing Creek Native American Culture Presentation Honoring the Indigenous groups of the Oakridge area October 12, 2024, Greenwaters Park Community Center
Coyote and the Fish Trap 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The presentation is appropriate for ages 5-10 years old. The presenter, Karen Raintree, will read the story “Coyote and the Fish Trap” and work with the children on an art project; making coyote masks to take home. The event is FREE.
A second presentation, Native American Culture Presentation on the Indigenous People Inhabiting the Oakridge/Westfir Area for Thousands of Years, will be at 5:00 p.m. The lecture is appropriate for ages 8-adult. The presenter, Deitrich (Deits) Peters, is from the Grand Ronde Community. This event is also FREE. Deitz will wear his traditional regalia, play his flute, tell stories, and take questions.
George Custer lives in Oakridge with his wife Sayre. George is a former smokejumper from his hometown of Cave Junction, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. and ran a construction company in Southern California. George assumed the volunteer duties as the Editor of the Highway 58 Herald in 2022. He loves riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, building all things wood, and playing drums on the weekends in his office.
