Oakridge City Council endorses Signature Trails congressional spending

By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor  —  The Oakridge City Council held a special session Thursday to approve a letter of support for  Congressional direct spending on trails specific to the Oakridge/Westfir area. The special session was required because of the short two day notice to submit a request letter.

Funds could only be allocated to areas that have shovel-ready projects. The Oakridge Trails Alliance brought the spending request to the attention of the City, requesting an endorsement. The Trails Alliance indicated that it currently has two projects that fit the criteria for the funds to be used. Over $500,000 is being identified as necessary to complete these two trails projects.

Additional signers on the letter of support that is being sent to Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley: City of Westfir, Oakridge/Westfir Chamber of Commerce, Oakridge Trails Alliance, and USFS Willamette National Forest. The Willamette Valley Visitors Association, Travel Lane County, and Travel Oregon are also being asked to support the request.

A copy of the letter can be obtained at Oakridge City Hall. Printing charges may apply.
