Oakridge City staff and volunteers at holiday event had a “ball” at the bowling alley

By GARY CARL/for The Herald  —  On Saturday, December 16th, Oakridge celebrated the 2023 annual holiday party held at the Oakridge Bowling Alley.

There were several large buffet tables offering food along with a selection of beverages. The event was well attended by award candidates and their families as well as many community members who worked diligently for the betterment of Oakridge during the past year & had been nominated for awards.

  • .There were six different categories for recognition and the winners in each category are as follows:
  • Citizen of the Year: Bev McCulley
  • Committee Member of the Year: Jason Nehmer
  • Outstanding New Business: Sweetvine
  • Non-profit of the Year: Southern Willamette Forest Collaborative (Sarah Altemus Pope, Executive Director)
  • Business Leader of the Year: Vanessa Tharp
  • City of Oakridge Employee of the year: Officer Valerie Miller – Oakridge Police Department

Matt Burney of So Metal designed and created the awards for each of the award recipients.

The planning Committee for the event consisted of: Councilors Chrissy Hollett & Dawn Kinyon, City Administrator James Cleavenger, RAIN Catalyst –
Melissa Prestinario & Michelle Emmons of the Oakridge-Westfir Chamber of
Commerce.

Though by invitation only, the City of Oakridge holiday party was well attended by City Council members and their families, the Oakridge-Westfir Chamber of Commerce, city staff, and the city’s host of volunteers.

George Custer lives in Oakridge with his wife Sayre. George is a former smokejumper from his hometown of Cave Junction, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. and ran a construction company in Southern California. George assumed the volunteer duties as the Editor of the Highway 58 Herald in 2022. He loves riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, building all things wood, and playing drums on the weekends in his office.
