The Oakridge Civic Information Initiative is a project focused on understanding and strengthening Oakridge, Oregon’s news and civic information ecosystem. This initiative aims to assess how local residents receive and share information, identify areas for improvement, and foster a more informed and engaged community.
As part of the initiative, Oakridge residents are invited to a Community Listening Session at the Oakridge Public Library on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
This session offers a chance to share thoughts and ideas about Oakridge’s news and information needs, connect with neighbors, and help shape the future of the community’s information landscape. Your voice matters—don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to the conversation and make a difference in your community!
This effort is a collaboration between the Sustainable City Year Program, the City of Oakridge, and the University of Oregon’s Engaged Journalism class, and is led by Professor Andrew DeVigal, the Director of the Agora Journalism Center at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication. The Center is dedicated to reimagining journalism’s role in civic life by fostering community engagement, building trust in local news, and empowering communities to thrive through better communication networks.
SCYP connects university resources with Oregon communities to address critical challenges and build sustainable futures. This partnership brings university expertise and local insight to create actionable solutions tailored to Oakridge’s needs.  Prof. DeVigal’s work bridges the gap between journalism and the public, focusing on participatory and collaborative approaches that amplify community voices.
Through projects like the Oakridge Civic Information Initiative, the Agora Journalism Center advances its mission of supporting equitable and service-oriented journalism that strengthens civic health.
