By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor/The Herald — The Oakridge Fire and EMS put on a breakfast feed for community veterans and active-duty service members and their families on Monday, Veterans Day, from 8 a.m. till noon.
Honoring our service members and veterans on Veterans’ Day was a labor of love for the near dozen active and reserve firefighters and emergency medical personnel. They all worked together, fixing and serving the plate of a warm breakfast.
The warmth of the fire house on a chilly and rainy morning couldn’t have been more inviting to the men and women who came for the meal and some camaraderie. Biscuits smothered in country gravy, eggs and sausages was the plat du jour. Gallons of coffee was consumed as well by
veterans, young and old, who ate and chatted with friends and fellow armed service members. The meeting room at the fire station was able to accommodate the crowd only because as some people came in, others were leaving.
All of the services were in attendance: Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Even the Merchant Marines made their presence known.
There were no barroom brawls between the different branches, maybe in their younger years perhaps. Luckily there was plenty of food to go around.
