By GEORGE CUSTER/The Herald — We at The Herald were fortunate enough to be contacted by Oregon Public Broadcasting the other day and invited to join a live radio broadcast. The talk show, “Think Out Loud”, is produced by Allison Frost and hosted by Dave Miller. The subject of a portion of the show spoke to the disappearance of newspapers around the country. However, the heart of the show centered around the emergence of rural as well as metropolitan independent nonprofit news sites that are filling the void for communities bereft of news coverage.

Guests on the show, along with George Custer, editor of The Highway 58 Herald, is Bradley Fuqua, editor of the Philomath News. The News is an online news site similarly structured to that of The Herald. The audio broadcast portion of the talk show can be heard here:
George Custer lives in Oakridge with his wife Sayre. George is a former smokejumper from his hometown of Cave Junction, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. and ran a construction company in Southern California. George assumed the volunteer duties as the Editor of the Highway 58 Herald in 2022. He loves riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, building all things wood, and playing drums on the weekends in his office.
