Oregon Vietnam Memorial Fund Hosting Dedication Event for Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Oregon State Capitol

Digital Flyer: VWM Dedication Announcement.pdf

The first phase of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Oregon State Capitol is complete, and the Oregon Vietnam Memorial Fund invites the public to attend the dedication of this historic, statewide monument to the service and sacrifice of Oregon’s Vietnam veterans. The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 22, at the corner of State and Cottage Street NE.

This meaningful event will feature tributes from local veterans and state officials, followed by a reception at the Withnell Family YMCA. This the first ever statewide Vietnam Veterans memorial on State Capitol grounds. The community is invited to join this significant dedication of this lasting tribute to Oregon’s Vietnam veterans. Help us remember and honor the 790 Oregonians who gave their lives and the 180,000 who served.

Between 1955 and 1975, 2.7 million Americans served during the Vietnam War, including over 500,000 on the ground by 1969. The war claimed 58,318 American lives, including 790 Oregonians, with four Oregon families tragically losing two sons each.

The memorial design features 46 black granite columns engraved with the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, creating a reflective space for veterans, families, and the public to honor their memory. Many Vietnam veterans faced hostility upon returning home, enduring ridicule and disrespect for answering their nation’s call. Today, we honor their service, recognize their sacrifices, and remember those who gave their lives. Thank you to all who served during the Vietnam era.
