By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor — Oakridge Post 64 of the American Legion will have it’s annual picnic on Saturday, July 22nd at the Willamette Hatchery located on Fish Hatchery Road. The event will be held under the covered picnic tables midway through the hatchery
Named for Oakridge son and Medal of Honor recipient Maximo Yabes, Post 64 strives to serve the needs of veterans and their families.
The affair is potluck. However, fried chicken will be the main course provided by the Post. If you are a veteran and would like to attend, please RSVP to either Skip Baker at 541-782-1100, or Ken Wright at 541-521-6815 so the Post can ensure that there will be plenty of food to go around.
With nearly two million members across 12,000 posts, The American Legion serves as a voice and advocate for veterans. The Legion has a myriad of programs: youth activities and competitions; health, employment and finacial counseling assistance; scholarships, and much more.
George Custer lives in Oakridge with his wife Sayre. George is a former smokejumper from his hometown of Cave Junction, a former captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. and ran a construction company in Southern California. George assumed the volunteer duties as the Editor of the Highway 58 Herald in 2022. He loves riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, building all things wood, and playing drums on the weekends in his office.
