By LYNDA KAMERRER/for The Herald — (Oakridge, Or). Everyone who would like to be seen in their best plaid attire will want to come to the Uptown District of Oakridge on Friday, October 6th. There will be a group photo of the plaid wearing public between 6 pm and 6:30 pm at the corner of First Street and Ash, across from City Hall. The Mayor and City Administrator have been informed and invited to participate. Everyone is welcome to model a plaid they cherish.
Plaidurday has some history
The best thing about International Plaidurday might be that there is no objective other than to have fun and gather as a community. This all started about 10 years ago in Lansing, Michigan. Visit plaidurday.com to learn more about the history and evolution of this annual fall celebration of plaid. There is also a Facebook page with photos and mentions of communities around the world sporting their plaids.
This seemed like a natural fit for Oakridge and Westfir as we move into the fall season and cooler weather. So many of us are campers, fishers, hunters, and just outdoorsy to the hilt, which most likely involves some article of clothing that is plaid.
Businesses are onto the plaid theme as well
Businesses in Uptown and along highway 58 have been contacted to gauge interest. St Vincent DePaul is enthusiastic and will put out a rack or two of plaid clothing for folks who want to renew the plaids in their wardrobes. Thank you Danielle! In Uptown, the library will be the information center for learning about the cultural history of plaids and tartans. Some businesses will encourage employees to wear plaid on October 6th and those who must be in uniform can simply pin a swatch of plaid fabric to their shirt that day to join in the fun.
There may be selfie spots in businesses where those wearing plaid may be photographed and then posted on social media to show the spirit of the day, JUST FOR FUN! when posting use #plaidurday and #stoakridge Let’s show the world what a fun and friendly place Oakridge is!
Kilts, tartans, and all manner of expression of plaid might turn up the First Friday of October. Both the Art Walk and Farmer’s Market are scheduled that day and both are on board to help us all have a good time with this.
