By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor/The Herald  —  Though 2022 is only half over, the clock started on Saturday for eighteen lives as they go forward into the world as graduates of Oakridge Senior High School.

Rain was pouring down outside. However, it didn’t dampen the excitement of the assembled families, relatives, and friends who came to see their favorite young men and women march across the stage and receive their diplomas.

The students, garbed in caps and gowns, marched in (some of them skipped in) to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance.

Oakridge School District Superintendent, Rita Doland, welcomed the attending guests as well as those who watched the commencement on a live broadcast link.

The invited speakers, David Gordon, and Laura Jacobsma told stories of grit and of faithfulness of duty. Their words were both inspiring and full of hope for the future.

High School Principal, Tracy Ross, introduced the valedictorians and salutatorians who had words of inspiration of their own for their fellow graduates.

Lots of scholarships

Scholarships were aplenty; most all coming from local families, businesses, and organizations. Ms. Doland mentioned that there was no actual money in the envelopes given to the recipients. The envelopes did contain instructions for each of the scholarships.

Lori Fine was asked to do the honor of announcing the names of each of the students as they stepped up to receive their diplomas. Oakridge School District Board Chairperson, Kevin Martin, and Susan Hardy, Co-Chair, presented the diplomas to the eager grads.

Principal Ross gave parting remarks after instructing the former students to move the tassels from the right side of their mortarboards to the left – signifying that they have officially graduated.

They were ready! Once the announcement was made, caps were thrown into the air and the recessional of gleaming faces poured forth to meet their destinies.

They worked hard to get to this terminus. We hope that they will remember their Oakridge roots and return with stories of grit and of faithfulness of duties sworn to.
