The Eugene Concert Choir teams with the Cascades Raptor Center to promote environmental awareness, biodiversity and humanity’s role in the web of life. As part of their 48th season, the choir has invited the 7-time Grammy winning Paul Winter Consort to join them in performing Winter’s Missa Gaia (Earth Mass) on Sunday, February 19th 2:30 pm at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts. This masterwork is both a pean and a plea for the health of Mother Earth. Winter combines songs from nature – whales, wolves, seals…and yes, birds – with jazzy rhythms, songs from world cultures, famous soloists and the spirits of the 100 members of the Eugene Concert Choir to weave a tapestry of wonder in honor of the Earth. The “Earth Mass” combines familiar texts from the Church with songs and music from cultures all over the world to celebrate the awe and wonders of life. Since 1981, the uplifting music of Missa Gaia has brought audiences to their feet all over the world.
This awareness resonates with the mission of the Cascades Raptor Center to foster connection between people and birds of prey. Since 1984, they have worked tirelessly to help the human part of the natural community to value, understand and honor the role of wildlife in preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest. The Center has a two-fold mission: to rehabilitate orphaned, sick and injured wildlife and public education to enhance awareness, respect and appreciation of the Earth and all its inhabitants so critical to the survival of a balanced and healthy planet.
