By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor/The Herald — A letter of opposition to the Old Hazeldell Quarry was unanimously approved during last Thursday’s Oakridge City Council meeting. Numerous reasons of concern were highlighted within the letter that is being sent to the Lane County Planning Commision and Board of Commissioners.
Among those concerns are responses from groups and citizens who vehemently oppose the proposed rock crushing and mining operation that would take place on top of TV Butte. The Butte is located just outside of Oakridge’s eastern city limits.
Old Hazeldell Quarry is a limited liability company heavily funded by Ed King III, owner of King Estate Winery, located south of Eugene. The plan seeks to transform 46 acres of the forested hillside into 17 million tons of high-quality crushed andesite rock that could be sold for highway construction.
The plan’s proximity to Oakridge’s aquifer is of significant concern to the city.
Following is a copy of the letter.
