That “next big storm” is losing strength as it hits Oakridge and surrounding area

All of the folks living up on the High Prairie might disagree with the headline. Regardless, it appears that the weeklong storm upon us now is losing some of its potency and looks to break by Friday, with lots of rain in the meantime (except for the higher altitudes – sorry High Prairie – more snow). The high winds that preceded our current storm have subsided and should remain light for the next several days.  Earlier, the storm was forecasted to continue well into next week.

Wind warnings are supposedly in effect till Wednesday evening, but other sites say Oakridge should not be affected. Be prepared in any case. Downed trees on the highway can create a dangerous situation for motorists.

Back to the folks up on High Prairie. The torrential rains we got in our area Sunday evening, yesterday and today manifested itself into snow, and lots of it. Reports of up to 24″ of new snow has fallen on the Prairie since Sunday. If you are a parent, you know this is why our schools started two hours late today.

The webcam at Willamette Pass shows continuous snowfall and the roads are almost indistinguishable with the exception of faintly visible tire tracks over already packed snow. Travel over the pass is treacherous, at best. It’s better to avoid it, if at all possible.

I received a really nice set of EXOspikes for Christmas. They are a form of crampons, but for walking. They slip over my shoes and give excellent traction on slippery ice and snow with their tiny metal nubs. I found out how well they work AFTER I took a significant fall on some ice a few days ago. My wife warned me. Sometimes you just have to let a person figure out on their own what the consequences are of not taking good advice in the first place. I wear them now, and yes, they work great. I’m still very sore from that fall. My pride aches, as well.
