By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor — While many printed newspapers around Oregon, and much of the country, have ceased printing due to costs, the Highway 58 Herald is going to print. Twice a month, you will be able to buy The Highway 58 Herald newspaper at selected locations. It will be offered for free for the first two issues. The online version will continue as it has in the past.
This is an experiment. We at The Herald are continually asked about a printed version of our popular news site. We’ve crunched the numbers. We hope to at least break even for the cost of setup, production, distribution and sales. Advertising and donations keep us barely afloat, cost wise. Also, we have recently taken on a few freelance journalists at a considerable expense.
The good old days of printed newspapers
I know that when I was a kid, my dad clipped every photo and story that had my name in it, usually sports. I want our readers to be able to do the same. Also, there are a number of people in our readership area who don’t have computers to keep informed as they deserve to be.
We at The Herald hope this experiment works. We do want to support our communities with timely, accurate, comprehensive and unbiased news and information. Communities deserve no less. Areas without local news have a diminished sense of community connection, lower rates of civic engagement and higher rates of corruption and polarization.
We do hope that you will make a donation to this most worthy cause. If you have donated in the past, please consider reupping your pledge. Our appreciation is most heartfelt. Your donations to our nonprofit is our life blood. A seemingly tiresome call, I know. However, we cannot do it alone. Thank you in advance.
We will let you know soon the exact date later in June when and where The Herald hits the news stands.
