The Oakridge Air program, working in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, says seasonal prescribed burning is about to begin again in the Upper Willamette.
“With the implementation of prescribed burning, Oakridge and Westfir may have short-duration smoke events,” the group advised Tuesday, April 13, in a news release. “In the coming weeks, residents will start seeing prescribed burns . . . in preparation for fire season and to create a healthier forest.”
The program advises residents to stay hydrated and to limit their exposure to smoke by keeping windows closed during burning.
Prescribed burning is used to improve the health of the forest and increase community and firefighter safety. The practice requires careful planning and is conducted under specific conditions of temperature, wind, and humidity. This allows land managers to promote ecological benefits from fire while keeping it safely controlled, all while reducing the likelihood of heavy smoke blowing into nearby communities.
“Prescribed fire helps sustain healthy forests, reduces the risk of out-of-control fires, reduces the severity of future wildfires, and keeps our communities and firefighters safer,” the group says.
The Oakridge Air program supports the community by connecting residents with resources that improve the area’s air quality. Home heating upgrades, air filters, firewood and education are among the resources provided. The program is made possible through an Environmental Protection Agency grant.
The Oakridge Air Facebook page offers up-to-date information on prescribed fire and wildfire locations, smoke impacts and health resources. Residents can receive text alerts about prescribed fire by texting “Oakridge Air” to 313131.
