Oakridge Voices for Education, a local schools advocacy group headed by Nicole Sulick of Oakridge, has announced a Facebook Live question-and-answer event with the three school board candidates she and her group support in the May 18 elections.
The session, set for 6 p.m. Thursday May 6, will feature conversations with candidates August Reed, Charlie Ross and Stacy Tindall. The three are running for the Oakridge School Board as a united slate called “Three Candidates for Change.” All three have also been endorsed by the Oakridge Teachers Association.
Sulick says she has invited their opponents — Susan Hardy, Clem Pope and Lisa Samuelson — to participate in separate one-on-one conversations, also hosted by Voices for Education, “with the opponent who is running for the same seat that they are.”
Facebook Live is a feature of the social network that uses the camera on a computer or mobile device to broadcast real-time video to Facebook. Thursday evening’s event may be viewed on the Voices for Education’s Facebook website. Citizens who are not on Facebook can email [email protected] to get a zoom link that will allow them to watch the session. Sulick also welcomed the public to use that email address to submit questions for the candidates.
“I am only including the OTA-endorsed candidates, but I will share a pdf (public on Facebook and emailed to the other candidates) of the questions once I have them compiled,” Sulick said. “That way the other candidates can address them in their own forum if they like,” or accept her invitation for one-on-one conversations hosted by Voices on Facebook Live.
Sulick founded the advocacy group last fall during a public outcry over the performance of Oakridge School Supt. Reta Doland. After Sulick filed a formal complaint demanding Doland’s termination, the school board denied it after hiring a consultant who interviewed both Sulick and Doland, then recommended against her firing. All three of the candidates invited to Thursday evening’s event have voiced criticism of Doland’s performance, while their opponents have either supported Doland or remained neutral.
The Herald invited all six candidates to comment on the subject, as well as on other issues, and their responses will be published this week.
