By JOHN ROSS/for The Herald — After an intense 90 minutes of at least as many fuzzy answers as questions, Lane County’s Planning Commissioners agreed unanimously that the Old Hazeldell Quarry backers had failed to meet several requirements for approval last night in Eugene.
Some commissioners were troubled by some of the outstanding issues more than others, but all agreed that the final decision would now become a matter for the full elected Board of County Commissioners to decide as definitively as possible.
In the end, much like area residents, none of the commissioners spoke in clear favor of the Stonebroke LLC application. And like the professional planning staff, the several shortcomings of the application left them with but one clear choice—to recommend that the application be turned down or at least modified after more definitive studies could be conducted to provide clearer benchmarks for quarry operations moving forward to actual blasting, crushing, shoveling, loading and transporting along the curves of Dunning Road, out to the Highway 58 corridor to destinations unknown.
The Herald is seeking clarification and context from planners and Save TV Butte opponents for this breaking story.
