By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor/The Herald — Oakridge and Westfir has lots of them: people who work tirelessly to support our communities and the people who live there. You’ve probably received the Lane Electric’s October issue of Ruralite magazine and their recently mailed November issue, replete with the 2024 calendar.
Most all of us should recognize our local residents who adorn the covers of each addition. October’s issue highlighted the work of Sara Altemus-Pope that earned her 2023 Member of the Year. The two-page article covers her achievements since forming South Willamette Solutions and Oakridge Air. Both agencies have had major impacts within the community. Sara is also a native daughter; having grown up in Oakridge.
In the Lane Electric’s November issue, the free Thanksgiving dinner at the Oakridge Methodist Church is highlighted. On the cover is Cathy Spenser and Judy Hampton. The article is about these two giving individuals who have tirelessly prepared and served these dinners since 1993. It’s all about community and ensuring that no one goes hungry. A small army of local volunteers, many of whom are family members of Cathy and Judy, help in the effort. As with so many volunteer efforts to support our community, funds and bodies are always in short supply. Consider donating or volunteering to help this Thanksgiving.
Please read the articles on both of our shining examples of community involvement for more details. They’re both enlightening and inspiring .
