GARY L. SMITH of Dexter was honored for his Army service in Vietnam during a “Quilts of Valor” ceremony Saturday afternoon in the Lowell High School gymnasium. Smith, 76, who served from 1965-69 in an Army unit, received the quilt after Jerry Morgan of Lowell, left, described that 276,000 quilts were presented to former service personnel last year in the United States. Sheila Snyder, second from left, created the quilt for the sponsoring Pine Needlers quilting group. Also participating was Gary Dulley, right, of Pleasant Hill. A hundred quilts will continue to be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday when winning raffle tickets will be drawn. Admission is free. A mini-Blackberry Jam festival that drew 26 classic cars to downtown Lowell concluded Saturday.
