Visitors from the north: Snow geese set up camp on Oakridge athletic field

By GEORGE CUSTER/Editor  — If you’ve happened to drive by or live by the DeHarpport Field just west of the Oakridge High School, you have probably noticed a flock of snow geese that are probably about mid-point in their journey south to warmer clime.

Yes, they make a lot of dropping. A LOT of droppings. But that’s what geese do. Hopefully they are here for just a short layover before heading en masse toward Southern California or locales father south in Mexico. I’ve seen the honkers here before. This is a somewhat rare sight I’m told.

Is their presence a predictor of the rest of our winter? Snow geese tend to settle-in below the snow line. Might we have these visitors for an extended stay? The will certainly head north into upper Canada and Alaska for breeding in the spring. From what little I’ve read, they are fairly smart creatures.

The flock of around sixty geese seem to be quite comfortable inside the track. However, I did have to choose my walking path to get the above picture with care. Goose droppings are also prevalent on the track. This will not be tolerated come spring by either the track or football coaches. I believe that they will know when they’ve worn out their welcome.
