A group of Oakridge-Westfir citizens worked on a second phase of a beautification project Friday afternoon at the western edge of the Old Mill Disc Golf Course at Coho Lane.
Talk of beautification started in early February when Lynda Kamerrer noticed the tremendous amount of work by Oakridge Disc Golf Club members all around the 22-acre property owned by the city and mostly maintained by the club through a cooperative agreement. The memo of understanding includes work by a dedicated group of avid disc golfers and the City of Oakridge Public Works Department.
The project Friday afternoon was kicked off several weeks ago with a meeting involving Jason Nehmer, president of the Disc Golf Club and designer of the course; Bryan Cutchen, city administrator, and Robert Chrisman, director of public works. A plan was made to improve the look of the entry at Coho Lane by smoothing some of the rock piles left over from construction and adding some new plantings.
This is the nearest entry to Highway 58, which often attracts first-time players. This spot also faces the Salmon Creek Estates neighborhood, where many new homes have been constructed over the past couple of years. Beautification has been a priority in Oakridge city government for many years.
In phase one of the project, volunteers were recruited to help plan the details. Dee Sidwell, a local business owner, Chamber board member and retired nursery owner, gave advice on species, design, and the idea to build a hugelkultur bed. Denise Cater, another retired business owner and expert gardener, is volunteering her skills and equipment to the project.
Inbound LLC of Oakridge spent a day with equipment and staff to clear and collect woody debris on site to provide materials for the project. Public works staff cleared rock piles, took out dead trees, and installed a much-needed dog-waste station near the entrance. Public Works also delivered a portable toilet to the Old Mill Park since it does not have a bathroom at present.
